10 Travel Snacks for a Healthy Lifestyle
Ever get the munchies and need REAL food after you've been screened through TSA and are now subject to enormous price tags? With a little preparation, you can feast on healthy and delicious food while traveling.
1. DRIED FRUIT. Fruit is a delicious snack that when dried is convenient and long lasting. Pick up a variety of dried fruit and put together your very own mix.
2. BEEF JERKY. It seems I never eat jerky unless I am traveling in some fashion. This is a great alternative when you are needing something more filling with a shot of protein. There is so much more variety beyond beef.
3. CHEESE/CRACKERS- Whether you are one to snack on processed cheese and Ritz crackers or bringing fresh cheese and crackers, let your imagination run wild with these. One benefit of using processed cheese is that it doesn't need to be refrigerated. Let's face it though. It just doesn't compare. So if you find that you would be eating it shortly or don't mind having soft cheese, slice up some cheese into a Ziploc bag with crackers or an Apple. Delicious!
4. BREAKFAST- I tend to always book my flights to leave before I even have a chance to think about breakfast. Muffins, granola bars, pastries...why not prepare in advance a Banana Oat Breakfast Cookie? These wonder treats pack a punch with peanut butter, bananas, oats and cranberries. These are best eaten within 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
- 1 large banana (1/2 cup), mashed
- 1/2 cup reduced fat peanut butter, creamy or chunky
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the banana, peanut butter, honey, applesauce, and the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda. Stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture until well-combined. Stir in the raisins or dried cranberries.
- Prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper (or spray with non-stick spray) or a baking mat. Drop the dough onto the pan using a 1/4 cup measure. Leave approximately 3 inches in between each cookie. Wet a spatula and flatten down the mounds of dough so they are about 1/2 inch thick.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until browned.
6. NUTS- Nuts are always a great and healthy snack. When flying, our body tends to retain water. Try to avoid too much salt as your body will retain more water while traveling. Go ahead and grab large packs of nuts and create your own trail mix in snack baggies.
7. CHOCOLATE- Chocolate cravings are no laughing matter, especially when you're stuck 30,000 feet in the air. Thankfully, you can avoid these situations by keeping a quick bite close by.
8. CHIPS- There's no denying that potato chips make a great snack, but you can do better for your flight. Turn on your favorite flick and break out one of these individual bags of kettle corn. Each bag is more than enough for a filling snack, and you get six in a pack. This cheddar snack mix is also a great way to shake things up a bit during your favorite shows. It brings the cheese and crackers into one box and is way better than any standard airline snack. These, however, are just two ideas for chip alternatives. Have fun with the flavors and your flight will be smooth sailing (or flying).
9. GUM/MINTS- The benefits of these go beyond your mere fresh breath. Whether you are driving up a mountain or taking off on a flight, gum helps alleviate ears that won't pop. Mints bring moisture to your mouth when water is not available.
10. WATER- So many airports are now offering filtered water dispensers by the drinking fountains. Bring your empty water bottles to refill after you have checked through TSA. Drinking water is the key to overall health. So Drink, Drink, Drink!
